Star Wars: Legion Buyer's Guide

Star Wars: Legion is an epic miniatures game for two players. The game is easy to learn but requires some research when expanding your army. Need some help? Read on!

Core Sets

To play Star Wars: Legion, you will need to purchase one of the two core sets currently available. Each core set comes with 2 of the 4 different factions, so your choice should be based on the team you intend to play.

In the original Core Set, Luke Skywalker leads the Rebel Alliance against Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire.

In the Clone War Core Set, the young Obi-Wan Kenobi of the Galactic Republic faces General Grevious of the Separatist Alliance.

Each core set is fully loaded with templates, tokens, dice, and the rules. Note that the miniatures require some assembly.

Creating a Full Army

An army of Star Wars: Legion can only be made of a single faction.

You can either build:

  • an army of 500 points for a Skirmish Game that is played on a 3' x 3' field;
  • an army of 800 points for a Standard Game that is played on a 3' x 6' field.

To calculate the size of your army, you add up the points of each unit and their upgrades.

With one Core Set, you will have enough points for a Skirmish Game. If you intend to play a Standard Game, we recommend buying 2 Core Sets to get double the units, double the dice, and more barricades. You will save a lot of money compared to buying these products individually.

Units have different types (called "Ranks") used for army building. Each Rank has its minimum and maximum.

Skirmish Game (500 points) Standard Game (800 points)
Commander 1 1 to 2
Corps 2 to 4 3 to 6
Operative up to 1 up to 2
Special Forces up to 2 up to 3
Support up to 2 up to 3
Heavy up to 1 up to 2

As you can see, your army must include a Commander and some Corps (your basic foot soldiers) while the last four Ranks are optional.

Commander Expansions

You will already have one Commander in your core set, but you are allowed to field two in a Standard Game. Want to switch Luke for Leia? Want more leadership on the battlefield? Here are some examples of Commanders.

Unit Expansions

Unit Expansions include Corps, Operatives, Special Forces, Support, and Heavy units. To know which is which, read the description of each product (or look at the back of the box if you are in a store).

You will have 2 Corps units in your core set which is the bare minimum for a Skirmish Game, but you will need 3 to 6 of them if you want to play a Standard Game.

Below are some examples of Corps units.

Star Wars: Legion is not only about light infantry! There are some massive vehicules too. Here are some Heavy units.

Terrain and Accessories

Does your battlefield look a bit too flat? Do you need more dice or more generic upgrade cards to customize your army? The following products are for all factions.

Paint and Tools

The miniatures of Star Wars: Legion are made of grey plastic. Painting them is not mandatory but imagine how awesome your army would look on the table! For some people, painting can be as enjoyable as playing the game itself. Need tips? Head to our Citadel Painting Guide.
